The 2004 production was based on the Old Testament Mystery Plays. The script was written by by local resident, Don Jowett, and the organising committee met for the first time on 10th February 2003. This time the production took place outside in Churchill Close Park, Blockley. There were 5 performances from 15th - 19th June 2004. The outdoor setting meant that the Mystery Play performances became the focus of a ‘festival’ of village events.

The 2004 Blockley Mystery Plays are a new adaptation of the Old Testament section of the Coventry Mystery play cycle. The plays tell the story of Satan's exile from Heaven through Adam & Eve in The Garden Of Eden onto Noah and The Flood through many famous Old Testament stories such as Daniel in Lions Den, David and Goliath, Abraham & Isaac and onto the Nativity and birth of Christ.

The Value of the Plays to the Community

As was so powerfully proved by the previous Mystery Plays production, the event provides a superb range of benefits to the local community of Blockley and its surrounding villages, as well as to a wider audience. In particular, the 2004 production:

  • Brought together a wide cross section of the local community from all walks of life who benefited from working with professionals who gave their time entirely free of charge, thereby fostering an even greater sense of harmony and mutual achievement.
  • Provided the local community with top quality cultural entertainment, available at a very modest price.
  • Created an occasion that was promoted throughout the tourist industry as an added attraction of the Cotswolds during the week of the production.
